Who are children with special health care needs?

Children and youth with special health care needs* are those who “have, or are at risk for, chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional conditions and who also require health and related services of a type or amount beyond that required by children generally.”   (US DHHS, Maternal and Child Health Bureau)

*We are committed to using inclusive and respectful language. We acknowledge that some people find the term “special health care needs” problematic. However, it is a recognized term by federal and state governments as well as funders, and we use it for compliance and clarity purposes. We appreciate your understanding and are dedicated to supporting all individuals with compassion and respect.
