Intensive therapy is a program where therapy occurs at a high frequency over a short duration of time. Unlike in a traditional therapy model where a child may receive 30-60 minutes of physical, speech and occupational therapies a week, children who participate in intensive treatment may receive an hour or more of each of these disciplines 5 days a week for 1-3 weeks. Under the intensive model, children are exposed to hundreds or thousands of repetitions of particular exercises, movements, and/or functional skills over a very short period of time which leads to faster acquisition of skills.
There is a growing body of research emerging showing children who participate in intensive therapy make gains in strength, balance, independence, functional mobility and Gross Motor Function Measure scores more quickly than those participating in traditional models of treatment delivery.
Our intensive therapy programming is individualized with a different treatment plan for each child. Intensive therapy programs are appropriate, safe, and beneficial for children with a variety of diagnoses, including developmental delays, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, stroke, spina bifida, chromosomal abnormalities, acquired brain injuries, developmental coordination disorder, as well as undiagnosed conditions. Our flexible programs may include participation in therapy groups in addition to individual therapy sessions and often include co-treats with multiple therapists. Treatment plans may include but are not limited to:
- Sensory based feeding therapy
- Trials of positioning equipment
- Trials of switches or other adaptive equipment
- Trials of AAC devices
- Partial weight bearing treadmill training
- Balance training using the SoloStep system or LiteGait system
- Therapeutic taping, including kinesiology taping
- Sensory therapy and development of a sensory plan
- Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI)
- Functional electric stimulation (FES) and/or Task-specific electrical stimulation (TASES)
- Total Motion Release (TMR)
