603 Legal Aid (formerly Legal Advice & Referral Center and the NH Bar Assn’s Pro Bono Program)

603 Legal Aid is a private, nonprofit law firm that provides free legal services to eligible, low-income people in New Hampshire. Their attorneys and paralegals provide legal advice by telephone in the areas of civil law listed below. 603 Legal Aid provides a wide range of services including referrals to private attorney volunteers.  Our clients’ information is kept confidential.

603 Legal Aid provides free civil legal help to low-income people and does not charge clients for legal services.

New Hampshire residents whose incomes qualify them as eligible for 603 Legal Aid services. They receive support from the federal government and provide services to clients with incomes and assets below levels which are set by Congress and tied to federal poverty guidelines. They cannot provide services to people who are incarcerated.

Provide help to clients with issues in the following areas of civil law:

  • Family
    Domestic violence, divorce, separation, annulment, adoption, guardianship, child support, parental rights and responsibilities – parenting time, primary residential responsibility (used to be called child custody, interstate custody);
  • Housing
    Landlord/tenant disputes, eviction, foreclosure, housing discrimination, housing preservation, rental deposits, public housing, Section 8, and housing conditions;
  • Benefits and welfare
    Town and city welfare, unemployment compensation, public housing, Social Security, Medicaid, Food Stamps, disability benefits, SSI and Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF);
  • Other:  If you have a problem in another area of law, we will refer you to someone who can assist you.

Busy phones – 603 Legal Aid receives hundreds of calls each day. If lines are busy, please keep trying. Because they spend as much time with each caller as is necessary, they cannot be available for every caller each day. You may be placed on hold for lengthy periods.They encourage you to use the online application as an alternative to calling in.
